I spent such a long time ignoring my hemorrhoids – I went through so much pain and suffering – that when I finally did overcome them, I wanted to write a small blog about my experiences. I was terrified the first time I saw blood down there…

I never used to have any problems with hemorrhoids at all. However, in June 2006 when I was 4 months pregnant with my first child, after having never had a hemorrhoid in all my life – I realized that I had one. I’ll never forget that first moment when I noticed the bleeding down there – I was terrified.

My doctor told me that hemorrhoids were a common side effect during pregnancy and that after giving birth the swelling would reduce and then the hemorrhoid would quickly disappear entirely. Knowing this I decided to persevere with the problem.

For the next 5 months the hemorrhoid became bigger and more painful than ever. The bleeding got worse, even though I tried changing my diet, and using a range of “solutions”, nothing I did seemed to help alleviate the pain and reduce the swelling.

Finally I gave birth to a beautiful baby girl and expected the hemorrhoid to gradually go away as my doctor had told me it would.

The inevitable happened

About 1 month after giving birth I had a bad case of diarrhea. As anyone with hemorrhoids would understand, diarrhea is the last thing you want when you have a hemorrhoid. While diarrhea only lasted a couple of days, my hemorrhoid swelled up to become about the size of a golf ball.

This made all the things I used to take for granted such as driving the car, a good nights sleep, walking to the supermarket, and going to the toilet an absolute nightmare. The pain became immense.

It was then that I decided I needed to do something about the problem. I couldn’t beat it by myself and I couldn’t go on living this way.
